“And we pray this in order that you may
live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit
in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with
all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance
and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you
to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.”
Growing in the knowledge of God may seem
like an almost no-brainer instruction –it does not take a genius to tell you
that it is a good idea to spend time getting to know God—but yet we still put
it off. We are given God’s Word, the Bible, a whole book written so that we may
know Him. Proverbs 9:10 says that, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of
wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” We can learn so much
about the Lord by simply studying the Bible, but we are also told in 1
Thessalonians 5:17 to, “Pray continually.” When you are good friends with
someone, you want to spend time talking with them to learn more about them.
Shouldn’t the same idea apply to God?
