In his letter to Timothy, Paul
writes, “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct,
rebuke, and encourage –with great patience and careful instruction.”
In the verse he makes three main
points. First of all, we should be ready to preach the Word at any opportunity
we are presented, not just the ones we know about beforehand. To do this we
must have a strong knowledge of the Scriptures. Secondly we are to correct and
rebuke our fellow believers, but also to encourage. Our goal is not to put them
down with our corrections, but to build them up. And thirdly, all of this is to
be done with great patience and careful instruction. This is perhaps the
hardest point of the three to do. As humans we tend to be more than a little
impatient, whether with others or the situations we find ourselves in. It is
something to strive daily for.
